The name comes from the Barolo Marchesi di Barolo Falletti, heirs of the powerful banking family in 1250 acquired all the estates of Barolo by the city of Alba. The Falletti began production in these vineyards in the early nineteenth century. That baptism was favored by a French nobleman, Juliette Vittorina Colbert from native Maulévrier castle in the Vendée, marrying in 1806 the Marquis Carlo Tancredi Falletti Falletti became the Marchesa of Barolo and moved to Turin. It soon became a prominent figure is great: he devoted himself to improving the social conditions of the poor and sick, ale women prisoners in jail, given to the worker, created orphanages, boarding schools and kindergartens (the first in Italy), and recovery, education and the livelihood of the needy. At that time the wines served on the tables and noble diplomatic appeared only the great French wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy.
In 1843, with the help of Count Camillo Benso di Cavour, the Marchesa di Barolo called the French winemaker, Count Louis Oudart to make quality wines. Count Oudart identified in the low temperature causes which gave the wine its sweetness Barolo and suggested the use of specific yeasts: the great Barolo was born. Soon the new Barolo infected even the King Carlo Alberto of Savoy, who asked her to let him try. So it was that one day the Marquise of Barolo the King sent 325 barrels Brolo.
The Marquise of Barolo sent a barrel for each day of the year, 365 less then 40 days of Lent (it was a very religious woman). Lomaggio the Marchioness went down in history: the 325 barrels, with a capacity of 600 LT, 325 were carried on wagons pulled by oxen 600, who occupied the center of Turin to Rome by passing the Royal Palace. Barolo had thus the honor of appearing on the tables of the Savoy family and large tables of Europe. Even the popes were left incana. Pius VII, having drunk a glass of Barolo, was heard to exclaim: "Ah, La Morra! Beautiful sky and good wine." So was born the slogan still evoked: "Wine of Kings, King of Wines".
